Essential Health Clinic

Prenatal Chiropractic

Pregnancy loads the lumbar spine, the sacroiliac joints and the hips, and a prenatal chiropractor treats what becomes painful under that load. A prenatal chiropractor works with lower-force adjusting on a table set up for a pregnant body. Relaxin softens the ligaments holding the pelvis together, and a forward-shifting center of gravity deepens the lumbar curve. Dr. Becky Lancione, DC, CACCP, performs every pre and postnatal assessment at Essential Health Clinic.

What Brings You In

Concerns Prenatal Chiropractic Treats

Pregnancy low back pain

Pregnancy low back pain

Lumbar pain in pregnancy presents as an ache across the low back that sharpens on standing from a chair or rolling over in bed.

Treatments+

Dr. Becky uses lower-force adjusting to restore motion at the restricted segments, then releases the paraspinal muscles that have been working as a brace. Kinesiology taping can offload the low back between appointments.

Causes+

As the uterus grows forward, the lumbar curve deepens and the spinal extensors shorten to hold the trunk upright. Individual lumbar segments stiffen under that sustained load, and the muscles around them tighten to splint the area.

Load shared across the pelvis
A pelvis that moves evenly on both sides keeps one sacroiliac joint from absorbing what the other has stopped carrying. Symmetry is re-checked at each appointment.
Positioning you can use at home
Side-lying setup, pillow placement, and getting out of bed or a car with the pelvis supported are covered during the appointment itself.
Activity you can keep
Walking and prenatal exercise are easier to maintain once the joints driving your pain are treated directly. Taping gives the low back support on longer days.
Care that continues after delivery
The postnatal phase has its own exam. The pelvis is reassessed, and treatment moves to the upper back and neck pattern that feeding and lifting create.
Prenatal Chiropractic Process

What happens at a prenatal chiropractic appointment?

Each step is shaped by your gestational week, your symptom pattern, and anything your maternity team has flagged.

Step 01 · Intake and pregnancy history
Intake and pregnancy history

Dr. Becky reviews your gestational week and due date, your OB or midwife notes, and how symptoms have changed between trimesters. Prior pregnancies and prior back or pelvic injuries both matter here.

  • • Symptom onset, pattern and aggravating positions
  • • Prior pregnancy and injury history
  • • Sleep position and pain at night

Honest Scope

When should you call your midwife or OB first?

Obstetric symptoms belong with your maternity team

Vaginal bleeding, a severe or sudden headache, new or rapidly increasing swelling, and contractions before term are all reasons to contact your midwife or OB before you book here. The same applies to any change in fetal movement or anything you would describe as an obstetric concern. Call your physician if you lose bladder or bowel control, feel numbness through the saddle area, notice progressive weakness in a leg, develop a fever alongside back pain, or have pain that follows a fall or a collision.

Chiropractic care sits alongside your prenatal care

Your history is screened at the first appointment, and that screen covers pregnancy complications, prior obstetric history, and anything your care team has already flagged. Your maternity team keeps the lead on obstetric care through the whole pregnancy. Chiropractic treatment here addresses the musculoskeletal pain that runs alongside it.

Sometimes physiotherapy or massage leads

Urinary leaking, pelvic floor pain and diastasis recti usually respond better when pelvic floor physiotherapy leads, with Rami Singh, MScPT. Where the picture is diffuse muscular tightness and fatigue, prenatal massage is the more sensible first booking. Dr. Becky says so at intake where it applies, and the referral is in-house.
