Herniated Disc Care
Low back pain that reaches into one leg points the exam toward the disc and the nerve root beside it. A herniated disc refers symptoms along the entire path of that nerve, which is why the leg often hurts more than the spine itself. All three chiropractors at Essential Health Clinic test the nerve before a technique is selected.

Lumbar Disc Herniation With Leg Pain
Pain sits in the low back and runs down one leg, sometimes as far as the foot. Sitting and forward bending usually aggravate it. The cause is typically the outer wall of a lower lumbar disc, commonly L4-L5 or L5-S1, giving way under repeated flexion and load, with displaced material then contacting the nerve root on one side. Treatment opens with low-force methods. The Thompson drop table and instrument adjusting restore motion at the restricted segment while keeping rotation out of the lumbar spine, soft-tissue work releases the muscles splinting around it, and you leave with positions that unload the nerve.
How Does a Disc Assessment Work?
Every step below is shaped by your neurological findings, your symptom pattern and your history.
Your chiropractor begins with when the symptoms started, which positions change them, and how far they travel. The path of the pain is diagnostic, because it indicates which nerve root to test first.
Details+
- • Onset and mechanism of injury are recorded, along with how the symptoms have shifted since.
- • Positions and activities that ease or aggravate the pain are mapped.
- • Previous episodes, imaging and treatment already tried are reviewed.

When Does Disc Pain Need a Physician or Hospital First?
Findings That Need Emergency Care
Loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness through the groin and inner thighs, or leg weakness that worsens day by day can indicate cauda equina compression. That presentation belongs in an emergency department. Go to a hospital.
Findings That Go to a Physician First
Back pain with fever, unexplained weight loss, night pain that wakes you, a cancer history, or severe pain after a fall is screened at intake. Your chiropractor says so directly and refers you on, then treats once the cause has been ruled out.
When Physiotherapy Leads
Some presentations are driven mainly by a strength or motor-control deficit. Physiotherapy is the stronger first modality in that situation. Ramandeep Singh, MScPT, practices in the same clinic, so the handover takes one conversation.
